SCAR Winter Blanket Drive 2014 – “COVER OUR LITTLE ONES WITH LOVE”

The Compassion Action Institute in New York City did a study and determined that shelter animals given blankets and comforters feel more relaxed, happy and secure in their surroundings…and of course, being more comfortable increases their chances of being adopted. Now winter is upon us and we are collecting blankets and comforters for our furry friends. Up to eight million dogs and cats are placed in animal shelters each year. And while it might be better than living on the street, normally overcrowded conditions and a lack of resources during winter months mean many of our furry friends can end up in kennels and crates that are less than warm and cozy.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

1. BUY OR COLLECT BLANKETS, CARPETS, TOWELS – donate this to the drive at our Sunset Park location: SUNSET PARK: 551 39th Street, Brooklyn NY 11232 – 347.599.1500 – OPEN 7 Days a Week – 11 am to 7 pm.

2. BUY BLANKETS FROM OUR AMAZON WISHLIST:

3. SUPPORT THE DRIVE WITH A MONETARY DONATION which allows us to purchase blankets direct from manufacturers at wholesale prices, which means we can buy even more.

4. REPOST THIS / FORWARD THIS ON TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COLLEAGUES – the more people we reach, the more animals we can warm up!

WE CHALLENGE COMPANIES AND SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BLANKET DRIVE!!!
Over the years we have had fantastic support from many companies, their staff and from schools. Running a blanket drive within your company or school is a great way to do your bit for the animals in our rescue.

Picture 006Here are some ‘tips’ on how to start:

  1. Get the go ahead: You first want to be sure your principal is cool with this sort of thing.
  2. Get teachers on board: Have the teachers promise to do something crazy if you reach a certain goal, like promise to wear a ridiculous t-shirt to work.
  3. Get your friends on board: You don’t want to do this alone so recruit anyone and everyone to help you out.
  4. Spread the word: You need to market your drive! Make posters and flyers ahead of time giving people the details. And don’t forget to include some pictures of homeless animals and facts on animal homelessness on there!
  5. Get attention: Use some creativity to decorate boxes/barrels. You can even put it on t-shirts, pants, whatever! The more people know about it, the more donations you’ll get.
  6. Use your lungs: Ask if you can make an announcement over the PA system, during morning announcements or homeroom. Or use your big mouth during lunch or in between periods and shout out the cause.
  7. Make it Easy: People are more likely to help if they don’t have to do much work, so offer to pick up the blankets at their house or set up a collection bin in the front of your school or in the lunchroom. As a matter of fact, DO BOTH!
  8. Show off the goods: Display the number of blankets you collected to get others into the mix. You may event want to set a goal and give a daily update on how close you are to achieving your goal. Put the numbers on a huge poster that you can display in a prominent place.
  9. Close down: Officially end the drive by posting the number of blankets you collected in the main lobby or lunchroom and give special thanks to everyone who chipped in.
  10. Now that you’ve got the goods: Send the blankets to our our Sunset Park location: SUNSET PARK: 551 39th Street, Brooklyn NY 11232 – 347.599.1500.

Again, make sure you get the okay beforehand!!

Thank you in advance of all your generosity, time, efforts and purchases!!

** OUR THANKS TO YOU! **

A big thank you to everyone for attending the 7th-Annual Howl-O-Ween Bark Block Party, sponsored by the Heart of Chelsea Animal Hospital! Whether you came out to volunteer, were a vendor at the event, or stopped by with family and friends for a spooktacular time, it’s supporters like you who make SCAR what it is! With your help, we successfully raised over $9,000-which will go a long way in helping lots of lovable animals find their furever homes! And we did just that during the event, too: 3 dogs, 7 cats, and 1 gerbil were adopted!
To help organize this year’s block party, we formed the SCAR Events and Fundraising Committee-a group of talented people who volunteered their expertise to orchestrate the best block party yet! What does this mean to you? Well, more SCAR events and fundraisers, for a start! Stay tuned because our awesome new committee is planning more fun and exciting ways to celebrate SCAR-while raising funds for our animals!

Lead by Director of Administration & Adoption Events Coordinator, Theresa LaBianca (pictured center below), SCAR’s adoption specialists and events volunteer team work hard year round to find the right person for each and every animal. Following a thorough conversation with a potential pet parent and pending approval of their application, we encourage them to spend some quality time bonding with the animals we believe to be a lifestyle match.
